UICentre is a collaborative engagement designed to stimulate and enhance the application of pharmaceutical and translational knowledge to elevate biomedical discovery at the University of Illinois to a level where the benefits of clinical application will enhance human health and benefit society.

Opportunities are available for Postdoctoral Research Fellows working with UICentre in both chemical biology and medicinal chemistry. UICentre provides resources for team-based research directed at discovery of novel small molecules as chemical probes and drug leads. The biomolecular targets and disease states are varied and derived from the research and inventions of biomedical scientists across the UIC campus and at other local, sister institutions, including the University of Chicago and Rush University Medical Center. Although Fellows will report to the UICentre director and core leaders, the Fellow will also interact directly with faculty and scientists who are engaged in collaborative project teams. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment and on more than one project is essential.
Applicants for positions in chemical biology should hold a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry, chemical biology, biophysical chemistry, or a related discipline. Experience with proteomics, macromolecular spectroscopy, cytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, chromatography, enzymology, and photo/activity directed probes is desirable. Target identification and validation, assay development, mechanism of action studies, prodrug strategies, structure-based drug design, and innovative probe methodologies are components of UICentre projects.
Applicants for positions in medicinal chemistry should hold a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry or a PhD in synthetic chemistry with exposure to biological/bioorganic chemistry. A background in medicinal or biological chemistry and drug discovery and molecular modeling is desirable. Experience in synthetic organic chemistry is essential. Synthesis of focused libraries, metabolites, photoprobes, fluorescent probes, and activity directed probes are components of UICentre projects. In addition, medicinal chemists are involved in hit-to-lead design and chemical optimization.
UICentre cores take advantage of the state-of-the-art instrumentation and facilities that reside in the Research Resources Center (RRC), including some of the most advanced NMR and mass spectrometry instruments in the midwest.
